Welcome to ComingFrom.org, where we showcase good examples of a particular kind of transparency in journalism. It’s when journalists are clear and open about who they are, how they think and what they believe. In other words: where they’re coming from. Or as the journalist Lewis Raven Wallace puts it, “the view from somewhere.”
This project is led by the 2022 cohort of the Studio 20: Digital First master’s program at New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute and program director Jay Rosen.
Here’s where we’re coming from…
As early practitioners of this emerging theory of journalistic transparency, a few Studio 20 students used the knowledge from their research on this project to draft their own Coming From statements.

“Transparency is not a slogan, or a nice-to-have. It’s a recognition that the world has changed and journalists are in the fight of their lives.”
